This unique and exciting project is the anchor of the new East Village development to the east of City Hall in Calgary. The National Music Centre (NMC) is a Calgary-based, non-profit organization with a vision to give Canada a place that amplifies the love, sharing, and understanding of music. The iconic NMC building design is both inspiring and challenging.
The Studio Bell has two five-storey blocks linked with an elevated bridge gallery at the fifth level that spans over the roadway below. The design of the building is complex and distinctive and is comprised of several independent vessels that create interior interstitial atrium spaces between the various galleries, workshops and performance spaces of the building. The building also incorporates a radio station, two recording studios, a 300-seat performance space and nine artist-in-residence suites where musicians can reside to collaborate and use the collection pieces in their creative work. Another unique aspect of the project is the revitalization of the historic King Edward Hotel and the incorporation of this century-old landmark in the new construction.
